The Four Trunks — canonical statement of how the vault’s philosophy fits together. Normative ontology (constitutive realism), verification epistemology (constitutive convergence), emergence metaphysics (unnamed), structural dynamics (unnamed). Read this first.
The Map of Philosophy — the accessible entry-point: the textbook three-questions-plus-logic map, bridged to the Four Trunks. Good orientation if the trunks feel abstract; shows what the standard map collapses (emergence folded into ontology, dynamics dropped).

Trunk 1 — Normative Ontology
- Morality — what’s right and why; constitutive/elective distinction; performative grounding
- Legal Theory — applied Trunk 1 to legal norms (nested under morality)
- Human Constancy — How Much Stays the Same, and How Would We Know — the question is a ratio, not a binary, and both poles (strong blank slate, strong essentialism) are strawmen nobody defends. Chris’s claim: we are more the same than we are different — with drift conceded up front, which is what makes it defensible. Central instrument is a checkable asymmetry: across a 3,000–4,000 year gap the ends-content of ancient texts is transparent (Gilgamesh’s grief, Ecclesiastes, Marcus Aurelius getting out of bed, the Ea-nāṣir complaint tablet) while the means-content (physics, humoral medicine, cosmology) is opaque — and both crossed the same gap through the same translators and survival filter, so if ends drifted at the rate means do, both would be equally alien. Layered model separating physiology / means / affect / expression, with the warning that change in expression is routinely misread as change in affect. Specimens: Reimer–Money (bounded, plus the second lesson — it was cited as proof of the opposite for thirty years because nobody checked), the Flynn effect as means-side (with reverse-Flynn as evidence it is environmental), and pair-bonding — corrected after first publication, and the correction flipped the evidence: Eagly–Wood’s convergence result did not replicate (Walter et al. 2020, 45 countries — equality predicted partner age, not preferences), and the broader gender-equality paradox runs the opposite way from social role theory, with sex differences larger in more egalitarian countries. The preference/outcome split is precisely the page’s fixed end, variable means prediction. The paradox is itself methodologically disputed (Simpson’s-paradox critique; stereotype explanations; “affluence changes what is rational” as the non-nativist reading) and the page refuses to trade one clean story for another. Downgrades the ratchet’s assumption from constancy to ends drift slower than means. Keeps its own strongest counter live: fertility collapse
- Constructed ≠ Arbitrary — the trunk generalized past the normative to constructions at large (masculinity, currency, marriage, borders, language). Constructions solve real problems ⇒ constrained at design and run time ⇒ non-arbitrary ⇒ evaluable ⇒ crisis := no longer functions for the purpose it was built. Adds functional failure as a third diagnostic beside convergence and collapse. Runs forward too: the spec it yields supplies the mechanism a casualty-list argument always lacks, and defeats the stability defense (a machine can be reliably broken). Names the severance (defining a construction as “distinct from” its substrate installs arbitrariness by fiat), its twin conflation (one word for both ⇒ neither side can state its position), and the three-layer stack the dismissal exists to keep you stuck in
