In Hawthorne’s 1843 story, a scientist named Aylmer becomes obsessed with a small mark on his wife Georgiana’s cheek — the single imperfection on an otherwise flawless being. He devotes himself to removing it, convinced that its elimination will achieve perfection. He succeeds. The birthmark fades. And Georgiana dies. The birthmark was the mark of her humanity, the bond between her spirit and her mortal body. To remove the last imperfection was to remove life itself.
This is not merely a story about a husband’s arrogance. It is a parable about the relationship between imperfection and existence — and it maps with surprising precision onto one of the oldest problems in philosophy: how do we know what is true?
The pursuit of perfect knowledge, like the pursuit of a perfect wife, can destroy the very thing it seeks to grasp. Truth is not something we arrive at by eliminating every imperfection in our sources, methods, or tools. It is something we approach through a process that tolerates imperfection while remaining disciplined about moving toward accuracy. The birthmark stays, and the wife lives.
No source of knowledge is perfectly clean. Every system we rely on for understanding the world carries imperfections that cannot be fully removed without destroying the system’s usefulness.
Science is supposed to be our most reliable truth-producing institution. Yet the replication crisis has revealed deep structural problems. The Open Science Collaboration attempted to replicate 100 published psychology studies and found significant results in only about a third of them. The problem extends beyond psychology into cancer research, pharmacology, and even physics.
The incentives are well understood: journals prefer novel, positive results; nobody gets tenure for replicating someone else’s findings; null results don’t get published. Large language models are trained on massive corpora drawn heavily from sources like Wikipedia and Reddit. Wikipedia has a fairly robust editorial process for well-trafficked articles, but it is unevenly reliable. Reddit contains genuine expertise alongside noise. The problem is not that these sources are purely bad — it is that they are unevenly reliable, and a language model absorbing patterns from this material has no principled way of distinguishing the trustworthy parts from the garbage. It learns what truth sounds like without any mechanism for checking whether what it has learned is true.

Political and legal discourse is saturated with actors who present advocacy as objective reporting. Organizations with explicit political commitments produce material that carries the structural markers of authority — citations, legal terminology, expert endorsements — while omitting context that would complicate their narrative.

In early 2026, significant controversy arose around ICE enforcement operations, particularly Operation Metro Surge in Minnesota. A search for information about whether ICE was “operating illegally or unconstitutionally” surfaces results overwhelmingly from advocacy organizations: the Center for American Progress, the ACLU, the National Immigrant Justice Center, and immigration law firms. These sources present a coherent narrative: ICE agents are entering homes without judicial warrants, conducting stops based on racial profiling, and violating Fourth Amendment protections.
Taken at face value, the picture is alarming. But several critical pieces of context are missing:
Immigration enforcement operates under a different legal framework than criminal law. Deportation is classified as a civil action, not a criminal one, which means many procedural protections that apply in criminal contexts — including the requirement for judicial warrants before arrest — have never applied in the same way. The Supreme Court has upheld this distinction repeatedly.
Administrative warrants in immigration enforcement are not novel. They have been a standard tool for decades, used across multiple administrations of both parties. The legal authorities being exercised in 2026 are substantially the same as those exercised during the Obama administration.
The sources presenting the “unconstitutional” narrative are organizations with explicit advocacy missions. Their legal arguments are not neutral assessments — they are litigation positions designed to advance a policy agenda.
An AI system asked to summarize “what the data says” about this topic will faithfully reproduce the dominant framing from its search results — because that is all it has. Without domain knowledge of immigration law, without understanding the distinction between civil and criminal proceedings, and without the ability to independently assess the legal arguments, the system produces a confident-sounding analysis that is actually one side of an ongoing legal and political argument dressed up as neutral fact.

The postmodernist school (Foucault, Derrida) holds that language is fundamentally about power rather than truth. What counts as “true” in any discourse is shaped by who gets to speak, which frameworks dominate, and what gets repeated and institutionalized. Truth is not discovered through language; it is produced by it.
Applied to LLMs, this critique has real teeth. An LLM is trained on a corpus that reflects the dominant discourses of the internet — skewing English-speaking, Western, educated, and shaped by the incentive structures of platforms designed for engagement rather than truth. When it produces an output that sounds authoritative, a postmodernist would say it is merely reproducing the epistemic power structures embedded in its training data. It is not arriving at truth. It is performing it.
But postmodernism is ultimately incorrect, and the reason is simple: the ideas that language talks about are grounded in reality, and reality exists with or without language. As much as language can try to convince you the sky is orange, in reality it is blue. Step outside and look. You can construct the most elaborate linguistic framework for why gravity does not exist, and you will still fall off a cliff. Language is a tool for describing reality, but reality pushes back against false descriptions.
This is essentially the realist argument advanced by philosophers like John Searle. And it is powerful. But notice what it requires: contact with reality. A human being can check language against embodied experience. They can walk outside, run an experiment, stub their toe. Their beliefs have what philosophers call defeasibility — they can be overturned by contact with the world.
This is precisely what AI systems lack. They can only check language against more language. Their “reality testing” is cross-referencing patterns in text. They live entirely in the domain where the postmodernists focused their critique — and within that domain, the critique has more force than most technologists want to admit.

Humans do not just have five senses; those senses constantly cross-reference each other. You see a glass on a table, feel its weight, hear it clink, sense its temperature. Every object exists at the intersection of multiple sensory streams, and that redundancy is what gives you a rich, robust world model. The closed loop between action, consequence, and updated understanding — what robotics researchers argue requires embodiment — may be the thing that no amount of secondhand data can replace.

It is essentially what the scientific method is supposed to be — and it is what breaks down when fields become ideologically captured, because people stop genuinely trying to falsify their own beliefs. When you encounter a claim that fits your priors, the most important question is not “what supports this?” but “what would make this wrong?”

Politicians position. Platforms optimize for engagement. None of this means these sources are always wrong — but it means their outputs are shaped by forces other than pure truth-seeking, and a wise reader accounts for that.

No single principle is foolproof. But together they form a triangulation — each one compensates for the weaknesses of the others:

The same lesson applies to knowledge. The imperfections in our epistemic systems — the biases in our sources, the limitations of our tools, the gaps in our experience — are not flaws to be eliminated on the path to perfect understanding. They are the conditions under which understanding is possible at all. The demand for perfect certainty leads either to paralysis, to dogmatism that mistakes confidence for correctness, or to the postmodernist surrender that abandons the pursuit of truth entirely because it cannot be had perfectly.
The alternative is a disciplined tolerance of imperfection: using every available tool — humility, adversarial thinking, domain knowledge, incentive tracking, and above all, direct contact with reality — to move toward truth while accepting that the journey never fully arrives.
