Episode 2: Thales of Miletus and the Birth of Greek Philosophy

Why philosophy began in Greece rather than Egypt or Babylon, and how Thales’s four surviving sentences launched the entire enterprise.

The Argument

Why Greece?

Peikoff opens with the obvious question: humans had existed for millennia before the 6th century BC, and surrounding civilizations — Phoenicians, Egyptians, Babylonians — had accumulated real knowledge in astronomy, mathematics, and other fields. So why did philosophy and science as self-conscious, systematic, rational disciplines begin with the Greeks?

Two things prevented the pre-Greek civilizations:

1. Supernaturalism about reality. They believed true reality was another dimension. This world was unintelligible — just a byproduct of gods acting behind the scenes. You couldn’t explain or understand it; you could only bow, pray, and beg. The same applied to morality: ethics was a series of divine injunctions, not something reason could illuminate.

2. This-world pessimism. If this world is unintelligible, it’s also not worth understanding. Peikoff’s analogy: imagine you’re trapped in a jail cell — you won’t develop a passion for the molecular structure of the bars. You just want out. That was the dominant attitude. Egypt’s pyramids are monuments not to life but to death. The question wasn’t “how good a life can you live?” but “how good a death can you die?”

In short: these cultures took religion seriously, and the result was the complete nullification of philosophical development.

What Made Greece Different

Political freedom. By the 6th century BC, powerful monarchies had given way to freer city-states, creating a climate where philosophy could develop. Peikoff notes the counterexample: Sparta, where government remained strong and produced no philosophy whatsoever.

A uniquely non-oppressive religion. Greek religion was unlike anything around it:

Consequence: the Greeks held that this world is intelligible and good. Their statues expressed what they considered realistic — the human form at its best. Homer’s Achilles, speaking as a ghost, says he’d rather live on earth as a slave to a poor man than rule the entire underworld. A pro-this-life civilization develops a love of knowledge. For the first time: a civilization of thinkers.

The Two Founding Questions

With essentially no prior philosophy or systematic science to build on, the first observations were necessarily elementary. Two phenomena captured attention:

Change. Anything that happens — mental or physical, any occurrence, event, motion. Seasons cycling, things born and dying, wet becoming dry, hot becoming cold. Peikoff strikes a match: a white-tipped, cold, hard thing → flame (white, flickering, hot) → smoke and a black remnant. Where did the flame come from? Where did the white tip go? How do we get from one state to another? How are the states related?

Multiplicity. The sheer variety of things in the world. Shoes, ships, sealing wax, cabbages, kings. Must there be some common denominator tying all these different things together? It can’t be that bananas are made of “banana stuff” and tomatoes of “tomato stuff” — that’s no explanation. And some things change into others (water becomes ice), so the two questions interlock.

Thales (fl. 585 BC)

The father of philosophy. From Miletus in Asia Minor, giving his school the name “the Milesians.” We have four sentences from him.

The hypothesis: There is one fundamental stuff — the “world stuff” — which makes up the entire universe. Everything is a different form of this one substance. This view is called monism.

The reasoning: If there’s one stuff, we can explain both problems at once. Multiplicity is resolved because all the many things are just different forms of the one stuff. Change is resolved because change is one form of the stuff becoming another form.

The specific answer: Water. Primitive, but based on real observations:

Why it matters: The specific answer is wrong, but the approach was of incalculable importance:

  1. Naturalism over supernaturalism — dispensed with gods as explanatory principles
  2. Natural laws — the idea that there are regularities in the nature of things governing what occurs
  3. Sense observation as the basis of knowledge about reality
  4. Seeking “the one in the many” — the permanent amid the changing — which is the scientific method in embryo

Peikoff connects this directly to the arc of science: physics reducing many laws to fewer (Newton → Einstein), chemistry reducing infinite substances to ~100 elements, then to subatomic building blocks. All inaugurated by Thales asking: what is the one in the many?

The Milesian successors (one proposed air, another earth, another something else) are passed over — they refined the specific answer but not the method.


Analysis

What Works

The Greece explanation is genuinely illuminating. The two-factor account — supernaturalism blocking inquiry, this-world pessimism blocking motivation — is clean and has real explanatory power. It’s not just “the Greeks were smart.” It identifies specific philosophical preconditions for philosophy itself: you need to believe the world is knowable and worth knowing. The jail cell analogy is effective.

The Sparta counterexample is precise. Political freedom as a necessary condition for philosophy isn’t just asserted — it’s tested against the Greek city-state that had the least freedom and produced the least philosophy. Clean data point.

Thales as method, not answer. Peikoff correctly identifies that Thales matters not for proposing water but for inaugurating naturalism, lawfulness, and the search for unity amid diversity. The line from Thales through Newton to Einstein is compressed but defensible.

What to Watch

The religion account is too clean. Greek religion was genuinely unusual, but Peikoff’s portrait of it as entirely benign and non-oppressive understates the role of the mystery cults (Eleusinian, Orphic, Dionysian), which were deeply mystical and otherworldly. These would later feed directly into Plato’s metaphysics — Peikoff presumably knows this and will address it, but in this lecture the Greeks get a somewhat idealized treatment.

“They took religion seriously” as the explanation. This is doing a lot of work. Egypt and Babylon also had practical engineering, navigation, agriculture, medicine — all of which require some naturalistic reasoning about this world. The difference may be less about seriousness of religion than about whether the culture developed an institutional space for non-religious inquiry. Greece’s political fragmentation may matter more than Peikoff emphasizes here.

The monism framing. Calling Thales a “monist” and treating the search for a single world-stuff as the origin of science is standard history of philosophy, but it’s worth noting that modern science eventually abandoned strong monism. The periodic table has ~118 elements, and the Standard Model has ~17 fundamental particles. The search for unity is real, but “everything is one stuff” turned out to be the wrong shape for the answer. Thales’s impulse was right; his category of answer was too restrictive.

History’s Verdict

On Thales’s method: Overwhelmingly vindicated. Naturalism, natural law, and sense observation as the basis for understanding reality is the foundation of all modern science. The “one in the many” impulse — seeking unifying principles — is the engine of every major scientific advance.

On Thales’s specific answer: Water is wrong, but not as wrong as it looks. Modern chemistry shows that hydrogen (a component of water) is the most abundant element in the universe, and water is central to biochemistry. Thales picked the right substance to be impressed by, even if his framework for why was off.

On the Greece question: Largely confirmed by subsequent history. Philosophical traditions have repeatedly flourished under conditions of political fragmentation and relative freedom (Athens, Renaissance Italy, Enlightenment Europe) and withered under centralized religious or political authority. The pattern Peikoff identifies is real.
